Come spend a colorful weekend with ceramic artist Katie Marks of Silver Lining Ceramics learning all about colored clay, colored slip, color development, and surface design! Hosted By Forest Ceramic Co in their Seattle Fremont location!
This two-day hands-on workshop will take you through the process of creating your own custom colors from scratch and then actually USING them! We’ll mix colored clay and slip, create color tests, learn how to develop the exact colors you want, and experiment with multiple ways of transforming colored clay and slip into dimensional, layered surface decoration.
I want to give you a whole new toolbox of techniques that you can take back to your own studio, experiment with, and incorporate into your own work and style.
Expect lots of demonstrations, information sharing, experimenting, questions, color, and getting your hands dirty!
Seriously! You do not need to know how to throw, handbuild, or even have previous ceramics experience to participate.
Forest Ceramic Co. will provide slip-cast cups for everyone to decorate, which means you don’t need to make or bring your own vessel! We can spend our workshop time focusing entirely on COLOR and surface design!
Whether you’re an experienced ceramic artist wanting to add colored clay to your practice, a beginner who is just getting started, or simply someone who wants to spend a weekend learning and playing with clay, you’re welcome here.

We’ll kick off the weekend Friday evening with an artist talk and special pop-up collection!
I’ll share the story of my journey with clay, from beginning wheel throwing in 2007 to building Silver Lining Ceramics into my full-time studio practice. We’ll talk about how my work and visual language have evolved over the years, the ideas behind the work, and the many technical rabbit holes that have shaped my practice.
I’ll also dive into the processes behind my surfaces, including colored porcelain, carving, custom glazes, glitter inlay, lusters, layered firings, and some of the strange experiments that have found their way into my work over the years.
I’ll also be bringing a small collection of my ceramic work with me to Seattle, which will be available to shop in person during the evening! This event is FREE and open to the public!

Saturday is all about COLOR!
We’ll start from the beginning and learn how to mix your own colored clay and slip using ceramic stains, including how to measure, test, and document your recipes so you can recreate your favorite colors again and again.
We’ll create line blends and biaxial blends to explore how different stains interact and learn how to develop the exact colors you’re looking for instead of relying on premixed options. We’ll talk about percentages, color intensity, testing, and how colors change throughout the making and firing process.
I’ll share the methods I use to develop the custom-colored porcelain and slips in my own work, along with plenty of tips I’ve learned through years of experimenting with color.
By the end of the day, you’ll understand how to approach colored clay as your own customizable palette and have the tools to continue developing your perfect colors back in your own studio.
12:00–4:00 PM
Sunday is all about taking the colored clay and slip we created on Saturday and learning just how many different ways we can use it!
We’ll experiment with multiple surface design and application techniques, including painting with colored slip, piping it like frosting, transforming it into sculptable clay for dimensional decoration, and more.
I’ll also demonstrate my signature drippy slip technique and show you how I use slip to build up the dimensional, layered surfaces you see throughout my work.
Everyone will receive 2 slip-cast cups made by Forest Ceramic Co. to use as their canvas for the day. Instead of spending our limited workshop time making a vessel, we can jump straight into experimenting with color and decoration!
You’ll get to play with the materials we created together, try multiple techniques, and decorate your own cups while learning how these processes can be adapted to your own ideas and your own work.
